Description
An antique Scottish box with saltire carved on all sides except the back. It measures 10 1/2″ long x 5 1/2″ deep x 3 7/8″ high. The beech wood is well worn, but still sound though it has a construction typical of the 1700’s or possibly early 1800’s. The hinges and catch are of fine wire and there is a catch missing to fix the lid securely shut. All woodworm has been treated long ago. This box has “character” in spades, including chips to the edges, scratches and general signs of its long life. Very clean inside. On close inspection the top and the front saltires have added carved curves in the grain like sunrays. Quite a talking point when seen.
