A superb mother of pearl coromandel sewing box dating to the 1840’s. This dark coromandel box is decorated with fretted floral mother of pearl panels on the top and front. The mother of pearl is suffused with pinks and greens, in some lights.
Inside there is a set of six mother of pearl reel holders, six butterfly thread winders, silver thimble, waxer, pincushion, scissors, bodkin, penknife, lace threader, button hook; all necessary for the Victorian needlewoman. The compartments are finished in blue silk. There is a secret compartment in the lid for storing letters, patterns and papers. The key is present but the lock no longer works. There is also a capacious storage area under the lift out tray for extra sewing bits and pieces. All is in great condition. Measures 10 14/16″ x 8 14/16″ x 4 10/16″
