A tortoiseshell sewing box fitted with silver sewing tools.

Description

A tortoiseshell sewing box fitted with silver sewing tools. Measuring 6″ x 3″ x 1 1/2″. Dating from the mid nineteenth century. The tortoiseshell is in super condition, all intact and with a highly polished finish. The box clasp snaps shut firmly. The pretty tools are all in very good used condition. They look to have been gilded once, just remnants remain. The tools are possibly French as there are tiny hallmarks on the needle case but these are indistinct. They may date to the early 1800’s. The thimble shows it has been well used from the dents, but no holes. It is hall marked for Chester, lion rampant, size 7 possibly makers initials are H. W. and is a later addition to the tools. The tools include scissors, bodkin, ribbon threader, needle case and thimble. The box sits on little tagua nut feet. All very charming.
